About Us

Welcome to Rainbow Ridge Farm

Innovation with Wise Roots

At Rainbow Ridge Farm, our mission is to cultivate chemical-free food through sustainable permaculture practices. We steward the land — working with it not against it — to nurture soil health, support pollinators, and produce delicious, nutrient-rich, chemical-free food. Rooted in integrity, kindness, and family legacy, we strive to strengthen local food security, share knowledge, inspire others, and to leave both the land and our community well-fed and healthier with every generation.

In 1977, 50 acres of land in Hare Bay, Newfoundland, became Rainbow Ridge Farm. Nestled between Atlantic Ocean and Boreal Forest, we’re growing good food the good way: no sprays, no shortcuts, just a lot of compost, elbow grease, and the occasional pep talk to a berry bush.

The Faces Behind the Farm

Hi, I’m Alyx — the granddaughter farmer bringing Rainbow Ridge back to life, one berry bush and bee hive at a time. I will soon be taking over Rainbow Ridge from my grandfather, Bernard, and have so many fun plans for the future!

I grew up here, often riding on Pop’s shoulders with the best view of the fields. He showed me the beauty of the natural world and taught me a deep love and respect for all living things that really impacted my life.

That influence led me into eight years of working with animals in a specialty and emergency veterinary hospital. Now I’m back tending my roots, blending Pop’s tried-and-true ways with new innovative ideas for growing food that’s good for people, the environment, and the planet.

Most days during farming season, you’ll find me tending plants, checking on the bees, or negotiating with particularly opinionated chickens.

Hi there, my name is Bernard Collins— Alyx’s grandfather and original founder of Rainbow Ridge Farm.

I was a sailor as a young man, but founded Rainbow Ridge in 1977. I created the foundation of what the farm is today. Back when the farm was originally operating, I grew an assortment of root veggies including cabbage, turnip, and potatoes to name a few. The farm has been out of operation for quite a few years now, but I’m excited to see what Alyx will make of it.

I also kept two horses over the years, Beauty and Dandy, who lived out happy lives on the farm.

Most days, you’ll find me hiking my trails throughout the farm, reading, fishing, or tending to the plants and animals.
