Just over a year has passed since I was offered the incredible opportunity from @nlyoungfarmers to join their farming mentorship program with @windyheightsfarmnl. This opportunity has launched me into the farming world, was a big push for the new beginning of Rainbow Ridge, and has truly changed the way I see my future in farming. I wanted to say a huge thank you to NL Young Farmers for all the great work they do to support new farmers and promote farming in Newfoundland! Opportunities like this truly matter, and they shape the next generation of farmers in ways that go far beyond the field.🌱 And also a massive thank you to everyone at Windy Heights who shared their knowledge so generously, and welcomed me in to learn alongside them. From foraging in the woods, beekeeping, seeing the business side of farming, planting seedlings, learning about regenerative agriculture, driving a tractor for the first time, and everything else in between... every experience, and each one of you taught me something valuable. I'm looking forward to our continuing and future farming adventures together!🐝 This mentorship program is the main reason I am where I am in the farming world today. 🐝Beekeeping Challenge 1 - Requeening a Hive One of our hives had mysteriously and suddenly become queenless — the activity was slowing down, and no eggs or young larvae could be found inside the hive anywhere. Without a queen, the hive simply can’t survive. To give them a chance, we borrowed a frame of fertilized eggs from our healthiest hive (don't worry, they didn't mind), and gave them to the queenless hive. Worker bees are incredible — when they sense they need a queen, they choose a young larva and feed them a special diet of royal jelly. In a few days, a new queen can hatch! After waiting about 3 weeks, we checked back and were thrilled to find a brand-new queen in the hive! We are proud to welcome the first queen bee to ever hatch in our apiary 👑🐝 🐝----___-_-_____ 🐝 ---_____---___- 🐝__---_--_ Fun bee fact: a male bee (a drone) actually has a grandfather but no father (...🤔). Drones hatch from unfertilized eggs, so they only inherit genetics from their mother (the queen). #beekeeping #apiary #queenbee #nlfarming #requeening #howto #beekeeper #honey

👩🏼‍🌾🌾 Meet our newest team member, Seedy Pete. Job Title: The official Field 2 Supervisor and Head of Crop Protection We built this scarecrow as part of our commitment to chemical-free growing. Keeping uninvited nibblers in check without harming the earth means getting creative. And don't worry, we make sure there's lots of food left for the wildlife! Scarecrows are one of the multiple natural methods we use to protect our crops while keeping nature buzzing. 🌱 Wise Roots Wisdom 🌱 Many years ago, Nan would watch Pop scatter seeds — only to have them snatched up by the birds before they had a chance to grow. He tried a lot of different things to keep the birds at bay but came back frustrated every time. One day, Nan quietly suggested, “Why don’t you build a scarecrow?” Simple. Natural. Effective. And just like that, the seeds stayed put, and the garden began to thrive.
